About West Virginia State Parks

The West Virginia State Parks system is home to 35 state parks, nine state forests and two rail trails. Together, the system contains some of the most scenic views, rich history and abundant collection of natural, cultural and recreational resources in all of West Virginia. From vintage facilities with minimal development that allow you to truly disconnect and embrace the great outdoors to modern resorts that offer an upscale experience amidst West Virginia’s rolling hills, there are so many places to discover and explore.

According to the National Association of State Park Directors, West Virginia offers one of the best and most diverse state park systems in the United States. Properties range from Stonewall Resort State Park, a AAA, four diamond resort, to Tu-Endie-Wei State Park, a two-acre plot of land thought to be the first battle of the American Revolution. The State Parks System not only operates resorts, restaurants and conference centers, but also civil war battlefields, museums and one-of-a-kind attractions, like Blennerhassett Island and the Seneca Fire Tower. This expansive network – of vast natural areas, historic sites, ski and snow sport hubs, rail trails and so much more – provides visitors with endless opportunities to see and experience the authenticity of the Mountain State.

With 164,000 acres of public lands, 10 resorts, more than 350 cabins and 1,500 campsites, the State Parks System delivers a variety of recreational, educational and inspiring travel opportunities to more than 7 million visitors each year.
